Album Review: Megan Thee Stallion Delivers ‘Good News’
Megan Thee Stallion, who is already one of the biggest names in rap, proves that she can rise to the top.
Prior to her album release, Megan Thee Stallion was already having a wildly successful 2020. From her release of the “Savage” remix that features Beyoncé, to her feature on Cardi B’s “WAP”, Megan had seemingly made this year a success.
But a couple of chart topping singles weren’t enough for the Houston rapper, apparently.
Despite a pandemic and being a survivor of gun violence this year, Megan seemingly decided this was no time to hit the breaks.
Her debut studio album, “Good News”, proves why she is becoming one of raps biggest names. She is witty, raps with intent strong enough to knock down walls and is well aware of her demanding presence.
The album opens with “Shots Fired”, and it is just as exciting and angry as you can expect.
“Imagine ni**as lyin’ ‘bout shootin’ a real bitch (huh?)/ Just to save face for rapper ni**as you chill with/ Imagine me givin’ a fuck it was your fuckin’ birthday (fuck you)/ You in your feelings, I just thought it was another Thursday”.
Megan delivered her blows quick, seemingly wanting to get the topic out of the way. But quick doesn’t mean inefficient. I’ll take the bet that anyone on the opposition wouldn’t be able to write a rebuttal track half as good as hers.
Second track “Circles” is a less serious song that is definitely “dance with your girls” friendly. But Megan isn’t quite done taking jabs at To** Lan**.
“Ni**as love usin’ instagram like a journal (yeah)/ Just like my ass, ni**as talkin’ in a circle (baow-baow-baow)”.
The verse is most likely in reference to that infamous Instagram live video, and is most likely a review of the over 30 minute long performance. Safe to say Megan wasn’t a fan.
Track three, “Cry Baby” featuring DaBaby, is less exciting and is lyrically focused on good sex. The track will definitely be a hit in sweaty clubs but will have to wait for its’ time to shine till next year. Or the year after.
Track four, “Do It On The Tip” featuring City Girls, is another track centered in sex and confidence. What puts track four a bar above its’ predecessor is Megan’s wit.
“If my heart broke, it’s nothin’ that my jeweler won’t fix (That my jeweler won’t fix)/ Put some ice on my chest just to cool my shit (Brr)”.
The verse is one of my favorites on the album, it’s a bit silly but also proves Megan is a master at wordplay.
The next few tracks are skips, until we get to “Body”.
The track doesn’t have a deep message or give listeners a look into Megan’s personal life, but it is fun. “Body” is oozing with Megan’s confidence.
“Yeah, you look good, but they still wanna know where Megan at (where Megan at?)/ Saucy like a barbecue but you won’t get your baby back”.
Track twelve is another high point. “Go Crazy” featuring Big Sean and 2 Chainz is an example of how exciting a track can be when two masters of word play collaborate. And Big Sean delivered.
“If the sextape leak and everyone see, know it’s gon’ be a classic (Classic)/ But don’t forget how quick I’ll crop you out and change the caption (Quick)…My mama prayin’ for me, she better pray for whoever in my way (Boy)/ Now how many besties done upped and left me? (Huh?)/ Who claimed they my dawg and just my pet peeves (Huh?)”.
Despite some tracks being skips, Megan Thee Stallion has proved herself incomparable on her studio debut album. She’s isn’t only one of the most promising currently active rappers, she is one of the best. Her wit and flows are among the strongest rap has seen in 2020, even a few years.
Judging by her confidence, she is well aware.
